McCurdy’s tricked-out truck not a welcome sight

When Ronnie McCurdy and his wife, Sueann, traveled to Joplin, Mo., on Oct. 19, they expected to see something that would change their lives forever.

Ronnie McCurdy was selected to get an overhaul of his wheelchair-accessible van by Country Music Television, but is not please with the result: a circus-themed van with no a/c.

According to them, that’s exactly what they got.

McCurdy was selected to be on Country Music Television’s Trick My Truck this past summer and was hoping the show would fix his aging handicapped-accessible van.

The McCurdy’s needed to buy the 1994 GMC Rally Van after Ronnie broke his neck in a diving accident and was paralyzed from the mid-chest down.

Over the last four months the McCurdy’s have made three visits to the show for taping and to see the progress on the van. According to McCurdy, the first two trips were the best times he has ever had.

It was during the last visit that McCurdy got the surprise of his life.

When he arrived at the garage where his van was being worked on, he hoped to see a nearly complete van that he could drive home and be proud of.

What he saw was a multi-colored circus-themed van that, according to him, wasn’t “anywhere near being finished.”

McCurdy expressed concern that the show had asked him about his hobbies and interests, but, according to him, didn’t listen to a word he said.

“I told them I like hunting and fishing,” he said. “Where they got the idea for the circus theme, I don’t know.”

McCurdy was also hoping the show would fix at least some of the problems he had told them about during his first visit.

“The van is not mechanically sound and breaks down all the time,” McCurdy said. “The A/C doesn’t work real well either. It’s real uncomfortable back there for me when it goes out.”

He also expressed his anger over what he called, “the most important part of the van.”

“They put in a brand new wheelchair lift in for me, but they wouldn’t let me talk to the company supplying them the lift,” McCurdy said.

“It was too small for my chair. I was 6 foot, 2 inches before I broke my neck, so my chair is pretty large,” he said. “One simple phone call with the company would have prevented that problem.”

McCurdy said the show agreed to replace the wheelchair lift with a larger one that would fit his wheelchair. He also noted that the show is going to fix a few more things that weren’t done when he last saw the truck.

“When I was there last, the van had no seat belts installed, no window wipers, no license plates and no inspection sticker on it,” he said.

According to McCurdy, none of the important parts of the van were finished, but one unique feature not on his list of wishes did make it into the van.

“They built a dartboard into the back passenger window,” McCurdy said. “It was done real well, but I have no clue where they got that idea from.”

“They told me they have close to $50,000 tied up in that paint job. Why would I let people throw darts at something like that? What the hell were they thinking?”

  1. Thanks for posting the article, was certainly a great read!

  2. Your welcome Jeff this is a friend of mine that was taken advantage of and instead of helping this Brother in Christ they tried to make him a laughing stock. Seems to me that this group of people need a lesson in Brotherly Love. We are to help the ones in need not make a mockery of their situation. We prayed for Ronnie when he was hurt and we prayed for this family to get relief and CMT has made a mess and did not help much. Hopefully this organization will make things right or you will see the end of that program for they have made a mockery of Jesus Christ by saying they are helping and then not. God bless

  3. I’m glad your readers are enjoying the story I wrote about the McCurdy’s.

I don’t mind that you pasted my story on your blog, but could you please change the attribution to read:

    Thanks.

  4. The McCurdys still have a battle on their hands. Please continue to pray for this family. To take on a huge conglomerate that thinks they are immuned from action is no easy task. There is a news article posted on the abc13.com website if you want to see Ronnie and hear his story.

  5. Here is an update from the MCCurdy’s:
Well here is the newest update, We finally got them to settle with us BUT it was not the people at Varuna films which are the people who produce the show and made the decisions to do the van this way! But the guys from K&L Customs which is Kelvin Locklear, Rob Robinson, And Ryno (which are in the show) they got together with the Shriners which the Shriners will get the van which is a good thing and gave us the money to buy the van we have been
borrowing from a friend and now we have to trick it out ourselves, Ronnie is online trying to find a lift we can install under the van and fix it where
he can dock in the fron passenger spot and put some seating in it. Well didn’t get all the glory from having it tricked out right, and the excitemnet of it but I guess we are better off we just have some wrok to do to get it there… But Prima Ball and the people at Varuna Films gets to
look like the good guys when they are not!!!!!

  6. On a personal note: I think it is such a shame that CMT and Varuna Productions can’t step up to the plate and fix their mess up. As I said on the CMT Blog, all the McCurdy’s were looking for was a miracle and Varuna and CMT pooped on it. Way to go I hope your show fails. God bless K&L Customs and the Shriners for doing the right thing. Hey K&L you got a web site we want to promote it for you? To Everyone in c2C Ministry send a note of engouragement to K&L

This is a TV show. This is a gift. This is creativity. Someone does something nice in a manner they think is nice and does it with a kind spirit what they give is what they give and is what it is. You may feel violated when it comes out to be something you did not expect. Whining about not getting everything just perfect and Santa Claus didn’t bring all the toy’s is not a very kind thing to do. Call Me inconsiderate, and I do not have all the facts and perhaps am out of line, I just read this blog and that is all I am commenting on… Sorry all your wishes didn’t work out but what happened to being thankful? The AC had issues going in. It may have issues going forward. The creations of Varuna Films Productions are wonderful entertainment creations, that is all they need to be. I think people need to be thankful you had that wonderful experience in your lifetime the experience and thrill of being selected for this opportunity.
I am sure there are many other charitable organizations when dire needs arise. It just seems wrong to go after someone that tried to do something nice for you.
    God Bless all of you.

THIS IS NOT A SHOCK. THERE IS A LOT OF FRAUD INVOLVED WITH WHO GETS PICKED. THE HARD LUCK STORYS ARE NOT ALL LIKE RONNIES. MANY ARE COMPLETE FABRICATIONS. THEY DONT STAND BEHIND THEIR WORK. ROB AND RYNO PRETTY MUCH DO AS CMY SAYS. THE CHROME SHOP MAFIA WAS AN HONORABLE CREW. BESIDES THE SHOW WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FOR SEMIS. MY BEST TO RONNIE AND HIS FAMILY.

  11. SCOTT ROGERS Says:

MOST OF THE LAST SEVERAL SEASONS TRUCKS WERE PICKED BECAUSE THEY WERE LOCAL IN STATE TRUCKS OR FIT A CERTAIN THEME. I DO CUSTOM PAINT AND THAT IS NO 50K JOB. CUSTOM PAINT AND AIRBRUSH IS ABOUT 60.00 AN HOUR. THEY WERE RUSHED BY THE SHOW READ THE LATEST COPY OF AIRBRUSH ACTION MAGAZINE. RYNO IS ONE OF THE BEST AROUND AT WHAT HE DOES.
