“A Silent Fool Is Considered Wise”
I saw this at the bottom of a spam email. Was this person sending a silent message of warning to stay away from what was being advertised in that email? Well that is how I took it and deleted it. I got to thinking about it and the Holy Spirit prompted me to look up the key words silent, fool, and wise and then I hit the “go” button and sure enough there it was Proverbs of course:
Proverbs 17:28
Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.
Proverbs 17:27-28 (in Context) Proverbs 17 (Whole Chapter)
How often is it we see people in a situation that we know has issues and they are sitting silent not saying a word? Wisdom is what they would be seen as using and if they continue to sit there and hold their tongue that is discernment. Basically what is being said here is we are to be quick to listen and slow to speak. Oh wait that’s here in the Bible somewhere too.
James 1:19
[ Listening and Doing ] My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
James 1:18-20 (in Context) James 1 (Whole Chapter)
When the world begins to throw stuff at you be sure to take this fools advice, sit silent and be wise.
James 1:19-27
19My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. 21Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.
26If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. 27Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
