OK Now for today’s Heritage: Civilization and the Jews program 5

When the dreadful news [of the decree expelling Jews from Spain] reached the people, they [...] wept bitterly. [...] However, they bravely encouraged each other: “Let us cling unflinchingly to our faith [...] If they let us live, we will live; if they kill us, we will perish. But we will not break our Divine Covenant nor shall we turn back. We will go forth in the name of the Lord our God.”

In this spirit the people, old and young, women and children [...] went forth on one day, unarmed and afoot. I was among them. They went whithersoever the wind carried them. Some fled to the kingdom of Portugal, others to the kingdom of Navarre. Many chose the way of the sea and were lost, drowned, burnt to death, and sold into slavery.

—Don Isaac Abrabanel (1437-1509), Memoir, from Leo W. Schwarz, Memoirs of My People Through a Thousand Years (New York,Toronto: Farrar and Rinehart, 1943)

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The expulsion of the Jews from Spain, on one hand, and the French Revolution, on the other, bracketed three centuries of major political, cultural, and social upheavals. To survey the changes in this era, both for Jewry and civilization as a whole, is to present a catalogue of advances, transformations, and reversals.

The Renaissance, which started in Italy, was based on a revival of classical art, literature, and learning. Its humanist philosophy emphasized reason and inquiry over faith and authority and valued everyday, human experience. In the German city of Mainz in around 1450, Gutenberg invented movable type. This technological advance enabled the mass production of books, making knowledge more accessible than ever before. In the 16th century, Copernicus discovered that the earth revolved around the sun— and modern science was born. Scientific achievements reduced the hazards of ocean travel, allowing Europeans to explore distant parts of the globe. Motivated by the desire for increased international trade, Portugal, Spain, Holland, France, and England established colonial empires in the Americas and Asia.

In Germany in 1517, Martin Luther initiated the Reformation, which challenged the authority of the Pope, questioned the ritual of the Church, and ultimately, split Christendom into Protestant and Catholic sectors. In the next generation, Catholic leaders such as Ignatius Loyola launched the Counter-Reformation to reaffirm the supremacy of the Papacy and the authority of the Church.

For Jews, the end of the 15th century was marked by tragedy. In 1492, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand expelled the entire Jewish population of Spain in an attempt to isolate conversos (Christian converts) from contact with non-Christians. Eventually, many of the exiles found new homes in North Africa, Italy, the Netherlands, the Americas, and the Ottoman Empire (which at that time included Palestine). In the 14th and 15th centuries, large numbers of Ashkenazic Jews from Northern Europe migrated to Poland and Lithuania.

Rabbinical scholarship achieved new heights in Salonika, Cairo, Constantinople, and Safed, which was the home of a spiritual revival centered on kabbalah, Jewish mysticism. In Renaissance Italy, Jewish and Christian philosophers traded ideas. Jewish philosophy began to reflect a humanist influence. Christian philosophers learned about Judaism and developed a new appreciation for the role of Hebrew culture in the formation of Western civilization.

Religious and social schism, as well as continuing persecution, rocked Jewish society. In the 17th century, in the course of a bloody uprising, thousands of Jews in Poland and Ukraine were murdered by Bogdan Chmielnicki’s Cossacks. In Amsterdam, Baruch Spinoza argued for the supremacy of rationalism over religious doctrine. His controversial views led to his excommunication from the Jewish community. During the same century, thousands of Jews around the world became followers of Shabbetai Zevi, a charismatic but erratic messianic pretender. In the mid- 18th century, Hasidism, a dynamic religious movement that emphasized joyous prayer over asceticism and scholarship, arose in Poland to challenge the Jewish communal establishment. Hasidism was particularly popular among poor Jews and quickly spread to other Eastern European regions.

In the 18th century, French philosophers, such as Voltaire, Rousseau, and Montesquieu, led an intellectual revolution known as the Enlightenment, which questioned traditional royal and Church authority by suggesting that human institutions should conform to new canons of logic and reason. The “enlightened” also argued for the equality of man and universal liberty. These ideas spread throughout Europe and even to the American colonies. In Berlin in the 1770s, a small group of Jews gathered around Moses Mendelssohn, a Jewish philosopher of the German Enlightenment, who sought to apply the ideals of the Enlightenment to Judaism. Adherents of the Jewish Enlightenment (Haskalah) aimed for the integration of Jews into European society and for a synthesis of Jewish tradition and Western culture. With the approach of the 19th century, the ideas of the Haskalah gained currency with a new generation of Jews, who were faced with new challenges and opportunities not encountered by their parents and grandparents.

“Something Important?”

You know about all the hoopla going on about 12/21/2012, right?  Well I was praying about these things and there is scripture to back what the scientists are saying if the things they think are going to happen on that day actually happen.  It is found in Revelation 16:17-21.

17The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and out of the temple came a loud voice from the throne, saying, “It is done!” 18Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since man has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake. 19The great city split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. God remembered Babylon the Great and gave her the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his wrath. 20Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found. 21From the sky huge hailstones of about a hundred pounds each fell upon men. And they cursed God on account of the plague of hail, because the plague was so terrible.

I AM NOT SAYING THIS IS WHAT IS HAPPENENING! Wanted to make that clear.  If this is going to be when the 7th bowl is poured out there are several other things that will have to take place within the next few years and actually there isn’t enough time between to make it line up with scripture.  So the 2012 event will be just that an event.  It could be the beginning though because it would likely take a huge shift like this to open the abyss for the beast that is spoken of in Revelation 13.

According to science on this day there is the possibility of a pole shift and if this happens there will be a whole Earth earthquake none the likes of which any man has felt before.  But the Bible says we will not know the exact time or day in which Christ will return and the Bible says to be prepared in good times and bad times for His return and there will be signs of the return of Christ and we have definitely seen those things for years.  I am not trying to scare you but I do want you to have your house in order and all of you pre-trib believers this should be an exciting time for you and for you post-trib need to get prepared for it seems the time is near.  I am sure that 2012 will be a banner year for the church but do not store up your treasures here on Earth but get those precious stone encrusted crowns that you may have something to lay at the feet of Jesus when you get to Heaven.  All I am trying to do here is to make you think and to be ready for when the time does come.  You must ask, seek, and knock that the door be opened for you.  Do not base a decision on fear but on what your heart is telling you.

Luke 12

Luke 12:4-5 (New International Version)

4“I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.

“Giving Up?”

I have ministered to a couple folks recently that tell me they are giving up on God.  When I asked why they would do something like that they tell me because He isn’t blessing them any more or He isn’t responding to their requests or answering their questions.  Then I ask what they have done for Him lately and they go into extreme detail of what they do on a day-to-day basis for the Lord at least that is what they think they are doing for Him.  Well the Lord blesses those who bless Him, right?  Then I dig a little deeper into their personal lives and find that they have unresolved sin in their lives.  They are normally under the impression for some reason that God blesses even if we are living in sin.  Well He places His blessings for us where He wants to place those blessings and if you are in sin God wont be in the presence of sin so if that is the case you will not be able to hear Him telling you where the blessings are for you so don’t give up on God.  God isn’t the problem, the sin that you have chosen to live in is the problem and you can’t get the speck out of your brothers eye until you get that plank out of your own eye so this “ministry” you have that you are supposedly serving and helping others is fruitless. Oh it may look good on the outside but it is like trying to build an outdoor ice rink in Houston in August you wont have anything put a shallow pool of hot water that is not very refreshing.  Before you give up on Christ you better go look in the mirror and find out what it is that you have done to separate yourself from Him and you know what?  God does say NO on occasion.  I have also gotten NOT YET from Him as well.  When I have unresolved sin I can’t even hear Him speaking to me and that part scares me more then anything else and I do recaps to find out where I haven’t sought repentance.  Giving up?  Do a self-inventory before you make that decision.  One other thing, there is no such thing as a little sin or a big sin, sin is sin period and the price is the same.  So you better go to the feet of Jesus and seek His Grace and Mercy that can only be given by Him.  The only way to the Father is through the Son.

Matthew 7:3-5 and also in Luke 6:41-43

3“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

“What’s Your Ministry?”

Jesus calls us all to ministry, what is yours?  The Lord calls us to do one ministry or sometimes calls us to do one ministry with many opportunities.  Like with c2C Ministry there are many parts to this ministry.  What part are you?  Maybe God has called you to service then you should serve.  I was talking to someone yesterday that the ministry she has is teaching children in a school.  Maybe you are called to show the love of Christ through how you live, well that would be all of us.  Do you have the call to feed the hungry?  Maybe you are to travel the world and be at places where natural disasters have taken place to help the children?  Maybe you are to help people with their taxes? Maybe even a mechanic?  Are you a carpenter for Christ?  Maybe you are a chef, are you a chef for Christ?  What is your ministry?  Helping the elderly?  Do you clean up for Christ?  Maybe you are a dog walker for Jesus?  I don’t just do c2C Ministry and VoltEdge Radio and all the stuff here but in my job I shine the Light of Christ so that people who need help can come to me.  Even if it is nothing more than a listening ear at lunch or a prayer request or just someone to call friend.  Those things come easy to me.  Maybe that is your ministry too?  My mom’s ministry is to be there for dad, my sister and me and my dad’s ministry is to be there for mom, my sister, and me.  My dad also grows a garden and shares the crops with his family and friends that is another part of his ministry.  What’s your ministry?  Send us a note and tell us about your ministry and we will do a drawing and give your ministry a blessing.  The deadline for entry is April 15th and we will announce the winner during the “Ask The Pastor” show on April 24th.

Peace and Agape Love,

Pastor Steve

“Spiritual Warfare”

Now here is a subject that many do not understand and some do not think is possible.  They blame it on karma or luck or just bad timing.  Well we definitely cannot discount the physical things that God has put into action here on Earth like the earthquakes and tornadoes and hurricanes and other physical storms that we experience on earth and those things happen because of what happened in the Garden of Eden.  It was because of sin that nature was put into motion but those things are necessary for a healthy planet as well.  Now that I got that out of the way let’s speak of the things we cannot see, the things that happen because we are followers of Jesus Christ, the stuff that cannot be explained away by things of the physical.  Jesus was very clear in His word that being a follower of Him would bring upon us persecution and even in that persecution we should sing praise that we are worthy of being in that position.  For those of us who live in His plan and seek Him and His guidance in our day to day life will experience the spiritual warfare from time to time.  In war you need to know the enemy so that you can defeat them and everything we need to know about our enemy has been given us in the Bible.  Our enemy is out to kill, steal, and destroy all of our joy in life that is given us through the blessings given us by God.  That mean he is out to take your very life if he can.  But as we continue to move forward in battle we also must remember this one most important thing.  We win!  Did I say that loud enough?  WE WIN!!!  No matter what is happening in your life no matter what your health is no matter if you have zero dollars in the bank no matter if your children have gone to the other side or even your parents for that matter those of us who follow and believe Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior have already won this battle we call life and there is nothing the enemy can do about but try and torment us while we are still here waiting on Jesus’ return in victory.  OH VICTORY IN JESUS!!!

John 10

Key Verse:

John 10:10
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Heritage, Civilization and the Jews

“The Crucible of Europe”

In the Name of the Holy and Undivided Trinity. When I wished to make a city out of the village of Speyer, I Rudiger [...]bishop of Speyer, thought that the glory of our town would be augmented a thousandfold if I were to bring Jews.

[...]I have accorded them the free right of exchanging gold and silver and of buying and selling everything they use [...] throughout the city.

—Bishop Rudiger of Speyer, Charter, 1084, from Robert Chazan, Church, State, and Jew in the Middle Ages (New York: Behrman House, 1980)

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

From the 8th to the 15th centuries, during the era that later observers would call the Middle Ages, new centers of civilization and patterns of life evolved out of the ruins of the ancient world. During these years, European civilization acquired some of the basic characteristics that have lasted until our time.

Western civilization in this period was divided between the world of Islam and the world of Christianity. Islam thrived in Spain and part of southern Italy. Christianity held sway in England, France, Germany, Italy, Eastern Europe, and, from the late 10th century, in reconquered Spain.

When the Muslims conquered the Iberian peninsula in 714, they imported there the radiant Arab culture of Baghdad and other capitals of the East. Islamic civilization in Spain reached its zenith in the 9th and 10th centuries, when the Muslim polity, the Caliphate of Cordoba, declared its political independence. Iberian Jewry blossomed and enjoyed what later came to be known as “the Golden Age of Spanish Jewry”—an era marked by extensive Jewish participation in public life and a symbiosis of Arabic and Jewish culture. This golden age came to an end when Spain’s Umayyad rulers were usurped by the repressive North African Almoravid dynasty. During the 12th and 13th centuries, Spain gradually returned to Christian rule, as Castile and Aragon, the two preeminent Iberian Christian states, led the Reconquista (Christian reconquest). Granada, the last

Muslim outpost in Spain, was finally conquered in 1492. In the early Middle Ages, the sparsely populated territories of Northern Europe were organized according to the feudal system, in which serfs farmed the lands of lords in exchange for protection. The Church was an integral part of daily life. By the 10th century, cities were beginning to grow in size and importance. Merchants and artisans helped develop a new, urban economy. Between the 12th and 14th centuries, Europe enjoyed something of a cultural renaissance. Architectural advances enabled the construction of magnificent cathedrals. An intellectual revolution took place as universities were established and scholars, such as Thomas Aquinas, sought to reconcile the teachings of Christianity with the principles of classical Greek philosophy.

Local rulers, seeking to promote commerce in the towns and cities, invited Jewish merchants to settle in their principalities. Eventually, Jews were viewed as economic competitors by the rising urban class. The Church, worried that the Jews’ non-acceptance of Christianity would encourage doubts about Christian doctrine, began preaching anti-Jewish sermons. Jews became subject to persecution, which ranged from being forced to wear special costumes and badges to being massacred (especially during the First Crusade and during the years of the Black Death). When the state rulers consolidated their power and the Jews’ financial services were deemed no longer necessary, the Jews were expelled from England, parts of France and Germany, and Spain.

“Choosing Your Weapon”

As everyone knows the boys and I spent Spring Break at the paintball field and I had never been before and I really do not like guns at all but for the bonding experience and the opportunity to be able to relate to my children I gave way to the paintball gun.  I did lots of research on the safety and the capability of these guns and found that even though there is some danger to them they are for the most part safe when handled properly.  I found that the most dangerous part of these guns is the compressed air that they require to send the projectile on its way.  They use either co2, compressed air, or nitrous in which the children’s guns use co2 and mine compressed air.  Yes I bought myself one of these guns.  In choosing the guns I chose for the boys a smaller less expensive weapon that is easily cleaned with only four major parts that are inexpensive to replace if lost or broken which was a good choice because they can maintain their own guns and not require me to watch over them.  I chose for myself a more durable gun that can withstand the elements be it dirt water shock of hitting the ground real hard or being dropped in the mud.  It has more moving parts and requires a little more detail in maintaining and keeping it clean which I didn’t mind because I am just one of those kind of guys the more complicated the better.  Now here comes the Biblical part and most of you probably have already figured out where I am going with this but read it anyway LOL.  Now David when he was going to fight Goliath was given the king’s armor and sword but David knew that he couldn’t succeed with the king’s weaponry.  So he went down to the stream and carefully selected five smooth stones and took those stones and his sling to go defeat the giant.  David knew that God was on his side and I personally think that David at this point could have defeated Goliath with a feather because his faith in God was so great.  David chose a weapon that suited him and in so doing he defeated the giant with one stone.  Why did David choose five stones instead of just one?  Goliath had four brothers.  Goliath made sure that he had enough weapon to take out all the enemies that would have likely come after him.  I know in paintball we use paintballs as our stones and we aren’t out to kill anyone but in selecting paint for your gun you have to be careful as we found out on our last trip to the field.  We had decided to purchase some less expensive paintballs to go into battle with and found that we were cleaning our guns more than we were shooting them.  So even though the king offered up the armor to David he knew that the Armor of God was all he needed.  He knew that this Armor comes at a great price and you get what you pay for even in paintball.

1 Samuel 17

Key Verse

1 Samuel 17:40
Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.

“Back To Business”

I had a great week off but now it’s back to business and getting things rolling again.  I really needed that week to spend with the boys to just hang out and do things together.  I also recommend highly that paintball be considered for therapy.  I have found a satisfaction in running around getting dirty and being able to legally shoot teenagers.  Nobody really gets hurt other than a welt and a bruise from where the paintball hits but the adrenaline rush and the competition is great from boys and girls.  I was actually surprised at the amount of women that were actually suited up and shooting at me.  I hope they weren’t seeing me as an ex-husband or even a current husband as they shot me in the face mask but all in all it was 3 days of fun and bonding with my sons and I have the bruises to show for it LOL.

I learned quite a bit in my week off and I will lay these things out in a Biblical perspective with a little color added from all the splats of the paintballs.  I even learned things from the welts and bruises I am sporting this week.  Oh and I also got some new TV stuff ready that I am going to be loading to the server this week.  But now it is time to wade through the hundreds of emails I have gotten this week and fix some things that I forgot to setup on the new radio server.  Oh and the Free Skate Day at Humble Skate Park was rained out so we will try again this Saturday.

Numbers 10:9

“Grace Amazing”

That Grace, so amazing, beyond comprehension, given freely to those who ask. WOW!  In valley times we need it and we seek it but only when we have exhausted all of our own thinking.  WHY?  Why not seek His Grace immediately when we are rolling down the hill into the valley?  Think maybe He could stop the roll?  I know He can but our human nature is to try and fix it ourselves.  My human nature is to try and fix it myself.  I know that He wants us to come to Him with everything but we get so tied up in what we do on a day to day basis that He slowly slips away from our thinking.  Our minds will always tend to move towards tangible worldly things instead of the things of God through His Holy Spirit and this is why His Grace is so amazing.  Even though we turn our backs on Him and even though we have failed Him over and over again He is still there.  He is still there in day one saying “Let there be Light”.  He is still standing there in the day you took your first breath, my first breath, and He will be there standing in the place that you take your last breath, my last breath.  Grace, so amazing, words cannot describe, yet we sing songs of His Grace and we write stories of His Grace and the Bible even tells us that His Grace is sufficient for us all.  Did you know that?

2 Corinthians 12:9
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
2 Corinthians 12:8-10 (in Context) 2 Corinthians 12 (Whole Chapter)

“Staying in God’s Love”

Jude 1:21
Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.
Jude 1:20-22 (in Context) Jude 1 (Whole Chapter)

Pretty simple concept, right?  Keep yourselves in God’s love?  How is that even possible since we are all sinners?  Repentance is the key but remember that to repent is to change ones way of doing things.  The fact that we can repent of our sin does not give us carte blanche to commit sin after sin.  It doesn’t mean that I can go out every weekend and commit sins of the flesh and then think that I can just repent and everything is ok.  That means that I can murder and then ask forgiveness yet go out and keep doing it over and over again and think that because I haven’t changed my ways that I am forgiven.  To repent of sin is to say your sorry and then stop committing the sin and asking for help to stop and change your life to better be in God’s love.  I want to be in God’s love every day and stay there until Christ return.  How about you?  So don’t just say your sorry, repent and change you life that you do not commit the same sin over and over.

Peace and Agape Love,

Pastor Steve
